Spatial segregation between Gray-cheeked Thrush and an introduced nest predator in a managed forest landscape

چکیده

Introduced species are known for inducing changes in ecosystems and their impacts on endemic island species. North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) were introduced to Newfoundland, Canada, during the 1960s have been hypothesized as a cause of precipitous decline Newfoundland Gray-cheeked Thrush (Catharus minimus minimus). To test prediction that led range contraction by thrushes, we completed 1960 point count surveys squirrel thrush over two years (2016 2017) western Newfoundland. Thrushes strongly segregated elevation, with thrushes now being commonly detected at only high most frequently low both rare inversely likely be present intermediate elevations. We evaluated local (5.5 ha) landscape (490.8 scale habitat affiliations using landcover data from provincial forest resource inventory assess potential synergistic invasion management. associated regenerating (10–30 post-harvest) clear-cuts, conifer forest, tall scrub scale, but avoided scrub, stands, second growth scale. Regenerating clear-cuts modified strip cuts selected Breeding Bird Survey show abundant lower elevations prior expansion across so our finding strong elevational segregation adds growing body evidence suggesting introduction played an important role sudden this insular songbird subspecies. Management should include efforts prevent spread upslope nearshore islands while more study is done other hypotheses regarding decline, well relevant aspects ecology little-studied thrush.

Division within the North American boreal forest: Ecological niche divergence between the Bicknell's Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) and Gray‐cheeked Thrush (C. minimus)

Sister species that diverged in allopatry in similar environments are expected to exhibit niche conservatism. Using ecological niche modeling and a multivariate analysis of climate and habitat data, I test the hypothesis that the Bicknell's Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) and Gray-cheeked Thrush (C. mimimus), sister species that breed in the North American boreal forest, show niche conservatism. Th...

Spatial Segregation in Demography: A Short Review

Abstract. Spatial has always been an inherent component of demography, and demographic processes are inherently spatiotemporal. Recognizing the importance of spatial in general and spatial segregation in particular in demographic analysis has created new positions in demography and its conceptual and analytical frameworks. The notion of spatial segregation refers to the distribution of social...

Relating surface fire spread to landscape structure: An application of FARSITE in a managed forest landscape

Recent studies suggest that manipulation of landscape patterns is the most preferred method to reduce susceptibility of landscape to fire spread. e evaluated the effects of landscape spatial pattern and spatial heterogeneity of fuel loading on surface fire spread using the FARSITE model n Chequamegon National Forest landscape, Wisconsin. Five forest management scenarios were developed to genera...

Effects of Forest Edges on Ovenbird Demography in a Managed Forest Landscape

We studied the reproductive ecology of Ovenbirds ( Seiurus aurocapillus ) for 3 years in a primarily forested landscape in northern Wisconsin. We searched for and monitored nests in large, closed-canopy northern hardwood forests adjacent to recent clearcuts ( , 6 years old) and measured the effect of proximity to edge on nest success, clutch size, and breeding pair density. Mayfield nest succes...
